Fraser Reaches the Fall Season Halfway Mark with Record Wagering

It has been a season of accomplishments at Fraser Downs. With wagering seeing levels not reached since 2013, the positive momentum continues to grow. There is active interest from south of the border and Thursday’s cards have been especially popular.

Kelly Hoerdt achieved a milestone on November 9, winning with his 3000th lifetime drive aboard Holiday Shadow. Hoerdt has supported Fraser Downs racing for the last few years and always brings a competitive group of horses with him from his home base of Alberta. The 58-year-old is nearing $20 million in career driver earnings.

A welcome new addition to the training colony is Rebecca Kanak. Her horses have consistently hit the board, and currently she has a winning percentage of almost 31%, with nearly 62% of her starters hitting the tote board.

Trainers Stu Boschman and Daniel St. Amand have both returned this season. Boschman has made an impact after several years away from the sport with a competitive stable, while St. Amand is easing back in slowly through the claiming box.

Racing continues at the five-eighths Cloverdale oval until December 26 on Thursday and Friday nights at 7:00 pm PT.

Handicapping Harness

by Dawn Lupul

As fall turns to winter, the opportunity to wager on harness racing becomes more appealing, as several thoroughbred tracks shutter for the season. Many of the top thoroughbred handicappers started out as harness enthusiasts, and they learned valuable lessons about pace, ground loss, and the importance of trips that translated well to handicapping the flats.

There are fewer variables in harness racing handicapping, as most races are carded at a standard distance of one mile. Horses race on a weekly schedule when they are in good form, and they hold their form more reliably because of the consistency.

The configuration of the track factors in handicapping decisions, as a half mile track plays differently than a seven-eighths or one mile surface. At many tracks, trainers often double as drivers, which adds an advantage of familiarity with their horse’s unique characteristics. Post positions also hold more significance in harness as opposed to thoroughbred racing.

The most important thing to remember when betting on any horse race is to demand fair value. There is no shame in passing races and waiting for the odds to be in your favour. Betting undervalued horses will inevitably lead to an ROI that is lower than it should be.

In the next newsletter, I will elaborate on the top three things I hold most important when handicapping standardbreds. One of them is a unique favourite of mine that can lead to some nice payoffs. Stay tuned for more!
