TWO STARTERS WITH BC CONNECTIONS

Two horses with British Columbia connections are expected to play prominent roles in the $250,000 Zia Park Derby for 3-year-old colts and geldings in New Mexico Tuesday, November 22.

Local breeder/owner Peter Redekop’s Apprehend is the 7/5 morning line favourite in a field of six that also includes this year’s Canadian Derby winner Great Escape (5/1) owned in part by Arnold Bennewith from White Rock, BC.

Apprehend, out of 2015 BC Oaks winner Hero’s Amor, was a $180,000 two-year-old graduate of last year’s Ocala June Sale and has a record of 2-1-0 in four starts this year.

Trained by Robertino Diodoro, Great Escape won his first race in graded stakes company in the Canadian Derby at Century Mile on August 20, improving his record to 2-4-0 from nine starts.

Bennewith shares ownership of Great Escape with a group of Alberta partners that includes, among others, Rick, Clayton and Lana Wiest.

The Zia Park Derby goes as Race 10 on Tuesday’s card over 1 1/16 miles at 3 p.m. (PST) and will be shown at all off-track locations with wagering available on HPIbet.com
